Description

Amante, Julia. Evenings at the Argentine Club. New York: Grand Central Publishing. 2009. 337p. ISBN: 978-0-446-58162-2. In a recent essay in the New York Times Book Review (14 March 2010), Jennifer Schuessler remarks that whereas "[w]ork has become central to many people's self-conception" (27) in contemporary novels it is usually only of marginal importance in characters' lives. She contrasts this indifference with the proletarian advocacy that was a major concern of other American fiction writers (e.g. Sinclair Lewis, Mike Gold, and John Steinbeck). And she maintains that contemporary novelists deride the white collar employee workplace, where jobs are metaphors "for the lies and illusions that underlie our economy, if not our civilization." One would hardly expect a novel such as Evenings at the Argentine Club to be pertinent to this issue since its title evokes a place where expatriate Argentines might gather for food, fellowship, music, and tangos. But this novel, whose action only rarely takes place in the author's idealized (331) Argentine Club, is as much a paean to work as it is a boiler-plate romance. The work is entrepreneurial, the romance is multi-generational.
